Main Purpose of the Role

The VP of Environmental Sustainability will be a key member of the AEW ESG+R function, reporting to the Chief Sustainability Officer.  This leader will assist in setting the firm's Environmental and Resilience strategy, roadmaps, and goals, and lead projects that drive the implementation, communication, and integration of sustainable practices that accelerate a global transition to a lower-carbon and more resilient future across the firm and its portfolio.  The successful candidate will pair a passion for building a sustainable future with a keen understanding of the financial and sustainability implications of the built environment.


  • Collaborating with investment professionals on key initiatives to support implementation of roadmap to meet AEW’s net zero commitment and other environmental and resilience objectives
  • Designing sustainability performance targets including at the building/asset level as well as for portfolios or asset classes
  • Developing and managing repeatable, consistent environmental sustainability and resilience programs, in addition to related strategies and policies
  • Interacting with ESG and GHG standards organizations and industry associations to contribute to thought leadership on protocols
  • Identifying and evaluating opportunities for carbon abatement; analyzing renewable energy purchase options
  • Monitoring benchmarking requirements across states/municipalities and ensure adherence among assets
  • Tracking green leases, other sustainability metrics, KPIs, and statistics among vendors/supply chain, etc. across AEW’s portfolios and assets
  • Managing internal matrixed support and external consultants to analyze and document current trends, risks, and opportunities 
  • Supporting the onboarding and integration of additional team members (including interns and full-time staff), as a key member of a newly-formed and fast-growing function
  • Acting as a visible resource both internally as subject matter expert and externally as thought leader, including active and valuable contributions to industry and sustainability organization

Skills/Experience Required

  • Degree (master level preferred) in relevant discipline
  • 7-10 years of related professional experience including with environmental sustainability, energy, climate change, and/or management consulting in the environmental sustainability space, including demonstrated understanding of climate-related risks and opportunities and how they impact financial outcomes and business strategy
  • Demonstrated expertise within the real estate sector, including the evaluation and application of sustainable solutions within the real estate context, or transferrable expertise (such as in a sustainable facilities function, etc.)
  • High degree of initiative, a bias for action, and an entrepreneurial approach to developing innovative ideas that will stretch the firm and our industry
  • Advanced critical thinking skills and demonstrated ability to synthesize quantitative financial and sustainable values as well as qualitative inputs into business case preparation
  • Well-developed interpersonal skills, maturity, credibility, confidence, and integrity, and demonstrated success in communicating complex topics in a logical and accessible manner to build consensus 
  • Ability to work independently, manage multiple projects concurrently, and manage time efficiently
  • Ability to effectively collaborate in a hybrid environment across geographies and platforms
  • Ability to lead through influence and meaningfully support the professional development of others
  • Self-starter and highly organized individual able to work well in a deadline driven environment; and
  • Ability to work as part of a team.
