Main Purpose of the Role

The Head of Tax Planning and Strategy will play a key role connecting the business and outside service providers to provide tax strategy, planning and structuring for AEW’s U.S. and offshore private equity funds, joint ventures, and separate account programs with a focus on real estate strategies with investments primarily located in the US, Canada and Asia-Pacific.  Additionally, the Head of Tax Planning and Strategy will be responsible for establishing and monitoring tax compliance policies and procedures across our AEW Private Equity – North American and Asia-Pacific platforms.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee tax-related structuring, diligence, planning and strategy for real estate investment products offered by AEW. Contribution ranges from the highest strategic level to the smallest details of a product's life cycle.
  • Develop and sustain relationships with and oversee the work of external tax providers in relationship to structuring, planning, and diligence.
  • Collaborate with business teams and other advisers to ensure the tax due diligence and structuring advice on prospective products and transactions is appropriate, consistent with established risk parameters, and in-line with the overall strategy of the business.
  • Operate as a technical and business leader for our complex fund structures and related investments providing solutions as tax issues arise over a product or investment life cycle.
  • Oversee the analysis and determination of the impact of potential investments related tax law changes.
  • Understand, manage, and document tax positions related to investments.  Raise tax awareness and oversight of tax risk within the business.
  • Work with the deal and investment teams both in the US and Asia-Pacific exploring new product ideas and proposed structures, as well as feeder vehicles for existing product types, to ensure an efficient tax structure.
  • Research and stay current on all tax considerations and requirements applicable to our products and/or investors, and effectively communicate these considerations and requirements to the Reporting Team, as well as other senior leaders.
  • Review contractual language, such as joint venture agreements, and address appropriate tax matters and review and supervise the preparation of necessary modeling with respect to tax planning matters.
  • Establish and implement the best-in-class policies and procedures around tax planning, tax filing, tax compliance, and tax structuring.

Skills/Experience Required

  • BS in Accounting (or equivalent); CPA, Masters degree in Tax, or JD/LLM
  • A minimum of 10 years of real estate tax experience in the investment management industry, a Big 4 accounting firm, or law firm
  • Excellent analytical skills and demonstrated understanding of complex tax concepts (i.e. UBTI, REITs, fractions rule, BEPs, DAC6, 13X)
  • Experience providing tax structuring and planning advice and tax support
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Excellent organization and time management skills with proven ability to multi-task
  • Ability to work effectively and cooperatively as a team member
  • Ability to take direction and complete assigned work independently
  • Ability to work thrive in a fast-paced environment
  • Ability to identify complex problems and provide/implement solutions
